Picture a coworking space and you probably picture kombucha on tap, a guy naming his startup after a Greek god, and someone doing a walking meeting for no reason. That stock image exists somewhere, sure. But it’s not really what coworking is, and it’s definitely not what a day at HeadRoom looks like. Let’s clear up a few things.
Myth 1: “It’s just for tech startups”
This one’s left over from coworking’s early days, when the whole concept was basically invented for app developers and their laptops full of stickers. These days, our members are accountants doing tax season from a quiet office, real estate agents between showings, consultants on back-to-back client calls, and remote employees whose actual employer is three states away. If your job involves a laptop and a need to not work from your kitchen table anymore, you fit right in.
Myth 2: “It’s noisy and impossible to focus”
Open floor plans with no escape hatch, sure, that could get loud. But that’s not the only setup on offer. HeadRoom has shared private offices with actual doors. You get to choose your noise level for the day, which is more control than most home offices offer once the dog starts barking.
Myth 3: “It’s expensive — I could just work from a coffee shop for free”
“Free” coffee shop work adds up faster than people think: a latte you feel obligated to buy every couple hours, wifi that drops mid-call, and a table you have to abandon the second someone side-eyes you for sitting there too long. A membership gets you reliable internet, a printer that works, meeting rooms you can book, and a door. You’re not just paying for an office, you’re paying to stop improvising your workday.
Myth 4: “You have to commit to a long agreement”
This is probably the most outdated myth of all. Flex memberships mean you’re not locked into anything close to a traditional office lease. Come in for a day, a month, or set up shop long-term, the point is that it flexes around your business, not the other way around. Y
Myth 5: “It’s isolating if you’re not into networking”
Nobody’s going to drag you into an icebreaker. Community at HeadRoom is opt-in: show up, put your headphones on, get your work done, and leave. If you want to chat with another member or show up to an event, great, that’s there too. But it’s not a requirement, and nobody’s tracking your small talk quota.
Myth 6: “It’s just for people who don’t have a ‘real’ office”
Coworking isn’t a consolation prize for businesses that couldn’t land a lease. Plenty of small teams and hybrid companies use it as a deliberate strategy: a satellite office near the Main Line without the overhead of a full commercial lease, a professional address without the five-year commitment, a place for a distributed team to actually be in the same room once in a while. It’s a choice, not a fallback.
The Reality
Coworking isn’t one thing, and it’s definitely not the stereotype. It’s whatever setup lets you actually get your work done using whatever option works for you in the moment. The easiest way to find out what that looks like is to come see it in person.
